2008 IIHF World Hockey Scores Economic Legacies

Halifax NS — As hockey fans from around the world board planes for Quebec for the semi finals and finals of the IIHF World Championship, Halifax and Nova Scotia are celebrating the major economic wins of co-hosting the largest annual winter sporting event in the world.

“From the Latvian spirit for sport in cheering until the very end to the high-profile sports legends and Canadian leaders, Halifax was infused with an energy, spirit and optimism that only major events can generate,” says Fred MacGillivray, Chair of the 2008 IIHF World Championship. “The lasting memories for both visitors and residents alike feel just as big as the economic spin-offs.”

This event was a success because of Trade Centre Limited's unique events hosting model —from the bid phase through Events Halifax, ticketing through Ticket Atlantic, the Halifax Metro Centre venue and the World Trade and Convention Centre as a venue for support staff and spin-off business as well as Fan Fest events.

Partnership funding with the City of Halifax, Province of Nova Scotia and the Federal Government through ACOA as well as private sector sponsorship made this event possible.

The IIHF World Hockey Championship continues on in Quebec where Team Canada will defend its title as 2007 World Champions.

Economic Impacts

The combined total of visitor, capital and operational spending are expected to generate a total of $22,307,510 of economic activity in the province. An additional $5,459,363 is projected in economic activity for the Old Timers Tournament for a total of $27,766,873.
