Halifax, NS— Sunday, February 21 will be Hockey Day for Haiti at the Halifax Metro Centre, featuring a big-screen, live television broadcast of Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey as Canada takes on the United States that evening. The event features three hours of family activities and entertainment prior to the broadcast, immediately following that afternoon’s Halifax Mooseheads game versus the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Fans are invited to stay after the game and everyone is welcome to enjoy pre-broadcast activities and entertainment running from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., when the broadcast begins, with the puck dropping at 8:40 p.m. Hockey Day for Haiti is a free, public event where donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be encouraged, in support of their earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
“We’re excited to host this unique community event,” said Scott Ferguson, President & CEO of Trade Centre Limited, the provincial crown corporation that operates the Halifax Metro Centre. “We’re encouraging people to come decked out in red, enjoy the camaraderie of cheering on Canada’s Olympic team together, all while supporting an extremely worthy cause.”
Pre-broadcast activities and entertainment will include the Deloitte Family Skate, 2011 Canada Winter Games demonstration and a Mascot Hockey Game. The first 500 people who donate to the Canadian Red Cross at Hockey Day for Haiti will receive a commemorative toque from Deloitte, the event’s presenting sponsor.
“We are thrilled to be a sponsor of the Olympic games and this very special community event,” said Shannon MacDonald, Atlantic Managing Partner, Deloitte. “The earthquake in Haiti may have happened a month ago, but the struggle has only begun. We want to do all we can to support the Canadian Red Cross as they continue their important work.”
