Halifax, NS--The 2008 IIHF World Championship not only left its mark on Halifax as a world-class event hosting destination, but it has also created a tremendous financial benefit for hockey in this province. Hockey Nova Scotia (HNS) received a $200,000 legacy fund cheque from the event’s organizing committee chair, Fred MacGillivray, who is also past President & CEO of Trade Centre Limited (TCL); Scott Ferguson, 2008 IIHF event Chair and Interim President & CEO, Trade Centre Limited; and Grant MacDonald, General Manager, Events Halifax. The cheque was presented during HNS Annual General Meeting banquet, held June 6 at the World Trade & Convention Centre.

"There are so many benefits to our community when we host a major event like the IIHF World Championship," said Mr. Ferguson. "There are the tremendous spin-off benefits to local businesses and incremental benefits for our entire province. To also be able to support the work of Hockey Nova Scotia really drives home the positive impact that large events can have on our province."

Darren Cossar, executive director of HNS agrees. "There are so many worthy programs," he said. "This money will make a tremendous difference." HNS will direct funds toward such initiatives as sledge hockey development; Hockey for All program; HNS scholarship program and much more.
