Chef's Corner: BlueberriesCHEFS' CORNER: Food for Thought

You hear dietary advice all the time: Eat your broccoli, eat more beans and drink plenty of low-fat milk. Avoid refined sugar, cut out trans-fats and reduce your salt intake.

Why are our food choices so important? Because the fuel we put into our bodies will transform to create a bio-chemical reactions that affect an enormous range of physiological functions. And studies increasingly show that we can improve that functionality by choosing the right kinds of foods.

In fact, the terms “functional food” and “smart food” are becoming more widely known, and waking us up to the realization that we have to be much more discerning when it comes to our daily intake of calories.

Functional food is food, fresh or processed, that claims to have a health-promoting or disease-preventing property beyond its basic nutritional function of supplying nutrients. Examples of functional processed foods include high-fibre cereals, calcium-fortified orange juice and probiotic yogurts, since studies have show that increasing fibre can decrease the risk of some cancers, increasing calcium can strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis, and live bacterial cultures can promote heathy digestion.

Organic, unprocessed and “slow” foods are, by nature, smart foods — these are really just terms that relate to items in their purest form, grown and produced without chemicals, preservatives and artificial ingredients. Items that take time to grow, prepare and cook. Smart foods like these energize, build, regenerate and soothe our bodies when we consume them as part of a balanced, diverse diet. And depending on our age, activity level, metabolic type and even the season, they can make us feel smarter, more alive and improve our well-being.

So get out there and eat your figs and fibre!

The World Trade Centre Atlantic Canada has been expanding its profile on the international stage as the result of a new initiative it has spearheaded for the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) in Ottawa.

WTCAC Business Development Manager, Michael Young, is promoting the FITTskills training program internationally through the organization’s global network of World Trade Center partners.

A trial FITTskills course he arranged in Cyprus this past July was so well received by the European and Middle-Eastern WTC participants, that WTC-TV– an online television network focusing on world trade issues and global economic news – filmed a segment on the importance of international trade training for WTCs which highlighted the FITT program in detail. WTC-TV can be viewed on the WTCAC homepage or visit WTC-TV online for a detailed program guide.

FITTskills - MexicoYoung also recently returned from Mexico after delivering a FITT International presentation at the WTCA Latin American Regional Meeting in late September. Following the presentation, Young was approached by the Universidad Autonama Nuevo León (UANL), which is now in negotiations to incorporate the FITT program into its university curriculum. Shown in the photo, left to right, are: Michael Young, WTCAC Business Development Manager; Richard Dandrea, World Trade Centers Association, New York; Marissa de la Garza Garza, Chief of Academic Exchange, Universidad Autonama Nuevo León (UANL), Mexico; Dr. Jorge Castillo Villarreal, Dean, UANL; and Eugenio J. Reyes, Director, WTC Nuevo León.

Young will be travelling to New York in mid-October to present the FITT International program to North American WTCs.

The domestic FITTskills training program offered by the WTCACcontinues to show an increase in participants. Upcoming FITTskills courses taking place at WTCC Halifax include Global Business Environment (October 23-24) and International Trade Research(November 20-21).

International Convention Update
Halifax is well positioned for success in the International conference market. Our proximity to Europe, the value of the Canadian dollar versus the Euro and the relative ease of ensuring international travellers are admitted into Canada are all factors that make us an ideal city for international meetings seeking a Canadian destination.

Over the past three months Halifax and the World Trade and Convention Centre have been successful in securing several international conferences that will make a significant economic impact in our city. These include:

  • the annual Crime Stoppers International Conference — August 2010, 600 Attendees
  • the 33rd Bioelectromagnetic Society International Conference — June 2011, 500 attendees
  • the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (IASSID) conference —  July 2012, 1500 attendees

The WTCC is taking it a step further and for the first time this November we will be attending the annual meeting of the International Congress and Convention Association in Victoria, BC.  This is the first time this meeting has been held in Canada and every conference city in our country will be represented.  We look forward to networking with our international colleagues to learn more about this market and seek new opportunities for Halifax.
